Get Together, Give Back

SDSU faculty and staff are invited to celebrate each other and the holiday season on Dec. 10.
By Natalia Elko

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

To encourage faculty and staff to get into the holiday spirit, the San Diego State University Celebrating Aztec Faculty and Staff Committee is hosting its third annual holiday event.

“Get Together, Give Back” is an open invitation to all SDSU faculty and staff to spend time together and reflect on a year’s worth of accomplishments and memories.

Get together

Set for 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10, in Montezuma Hall at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, the free event will feature seasonal treats — such as cider and cookies — and gives guests the opportunity to mingle.

There will be a special performance by the SDSU Chamber Choir, conducted by Patrick Walders, beginning at 10:30 a.m. followed by remarks from SDSU President Elliot Hirshman and other guest speakers.

Give back

There will also be an optional service activity where participants can choose to write on cards, designed by three students in the SDSU Graphic Design Studio instructed by Gary Benzel. Participants can choose to have the cards sent to either service members who won’t be able to make it home this holiday season or to Meals on Wheels in San Diego, whose mission is to support the independence and well-being of seniors by delivering meals to their homes by way of volunteers.

Each with its own unique style, the cards are a spirited reflection of the artistic Aztec students who created them. This year’s featured artists are Jennifer Cloes, Martin De La Cruz and Katie Hardisty.

Celebrating Aztec Faculty and Staff Committee

As part of the SDSU Strategic Plan, a working group was created with the goal of identifying and recommending celebratory experiences to recognize institutional and individual excellence of the university’s faculty and staff.

The Celebrating Aztec Faculty and Staff Committee is made up of members from across campus. The group is sponsoring “Get Together, Give Back” and is working to put on more programs that encourage faculty and staff to celebrate each other.
