Last year, Aztecs Rock Hunger collected 400,000 pounds of food for San Diego families in need, by far its most successful food drive yet.

This year, Associated Students of San Diego State University wants to do it again, hoping to collect 400,000 pounds of food and cash donations with the help of the entire San Diego State University community.

This year's food drive will run from Oct. 17 through Nov. 7. Though the campaign is centrally run through A.S., Aztecs Rock Hunger also partners with several other campus organizations, including Aztec Shops, Aztec Proud, Residential Education and Housing Administration and SDSU Athletics as well as off-campus organizations such as the College Area Business District.

Eighty percent of proceeds will go to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. The other 20 percent of cash donations will go to SDSU's Economic Crisis Response Team to purchase meal cards for students experiencing food insecurity.

The campaign will collect donations of food and cash at athletic events, concerts at Viejas Arena, and during tabling events on campus.

People will also be able to donate through SDSU's student philanthropy group, SDSU Aztec Proud, on Oct. 25 for The Great Give. Students who donate $10 to Aztecs Rock Hunger will receive a free Aztec Proud T-shirt.

“The most important thing is to help those in need, not just in the San Diego community, but also in the San Diego State University community,” said Alexander Shapiro, vice president of financial affairs for A.S. “This campaign is really something that unifies people for a greater cause. It shows the good this university is doing for the community.”

Just one dollar can buy up to six pounds of food, so every donation helps, regardless of the amount.
