Arts Alive SDSU at San Diego State University will host its first-ever, all-day arts festival from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Thursday, April 27 alongside the campus farmer’s market. ArtPOP! will extend along Campanile Walkway and the Scripps Cottage lawn, and is free and open to the public.
Enjoy art and performances
The festival will include multiple live arts performances and booths with displayed works from student clubs, groups and artists. Live music performances will take place at Scripps Cottage beginning with a rock performance from local San Diego band Los Hollywood, and a sensory presentation from the Electronic Music Club. A second stage at the flagpole in front of Hepner Hall will host multiple a capella performances from student group SoundWave, a performance from student band Sights and Sages, and four contemporary performances from the SDSU Dance Club.
Engage in art
Arts Alive SDSU will also host a multitude of art-making activities, including woodworking and a body painting station at Scripps Cottage. Arts Alive SDSU will also unveil a custom SDSU coloring book for students at the festival.
The SDSU coloring book was created using student artwork from the SDSU School of Art and Design illustration program and centers on the Common Experience theme of movement.
Booths from on-campus groups will include a presentation from the binational art group, Cog•nate Collective, who will present a pop-up listening station allowing students to hear stories, interviews, and music related to the experiences of immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. A booth from the jewelry and metalwork students in SDSU School of Art and Design will display handmade student crafted pieces, and a presentation from BioDesign,
a collaborative teaching course combining SDSU graphic design and biology students.
Arts Alive
Launched in 2014,
Arts Alive SDSU is an initiative dedicated to promoting the visual and performing arts on campus. Beyond promoting existing artists and performances on campus, Arts Alive SDSU also aims to infuse artistic practice into traditionally non-artistic curriculum. Through collaborative courses, Arts Alive SDSU has expanded the opportunities for non-arts majors to experience and be a part of the arts on campus. Collaborative courses have expanded to include classes that combine students in biology and graphic design, theatre and communications, and English and music. Part of Arts Alive SDSU’s ever-growing campus outreach has been the development of SDSU’s first annual campus arts festival, ArtPOP!, which presents culminating work from two of these collaborative courses while also bringing dozens of art opportunities to students throughout the festival.
