“SDSU is an integral part of the San Diego community, and this campaign brings the campus community together to raise awareness and fight food insecurity in San Diego.”

Since 2010, Aztecs Rock Hunger has donated 1.57 million pounds of food or the monetary equivalent to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, which serves an average of 370,000 people per month in San Diego County.

Last year alone, Aztecs Rock Hunger collected 448,240 pounds of food, making it the most successful drive in the campaign's history.

This year, the campaign hopes to eclipse that record by collecting 500,000 pounds of food with the help of the entire San Diego State University community. One dollar can buy up to six pounds of food.

The 2017 food drive will run through Oct. 22. It is organized through SDSU’s Associated Students (A.S.) in partnership with several other campus organizations, including Aztec Shops, Residential Education and Housing Administration and SDSU Athletics as well as off-campus organizations such as the College Area Business District.

SDSU's student philanthropy initiative, Aztec Proud, is partnering with Aztecs Rock Hunger for the fourth consecutive year. When a student donates $10 to Aztecs Rock Hunger through Aztec Proud, he/she will receive a complimentary black and red Aztec Proud hat. This partnership continues to build on the tradition of student giving at SDSU.

Eighty percent of donations will go to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, while the other 20 percent of monetary donations will go to SDSU's Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT). The ECRT uses the donations to provide short-term and long-term aid to students experiencing food insecurity.

“SDSU is an integral part of the San Diego community, and this campaign brings the campus community together to raise awareness and fight food insecurity in San Diego,” said Hayden Willis, A.S. vice president of financial affairs. “A donation—no matter the amount—can make a difference in an individual person’s life and have a great impact on the battle against food insecurity.”
