Following a campaign by San Diego State University Associated Students (A.S.), a referendum allowing for the expansion of the Aztec Recreation Center will move forward.

Students voted in the student fee referendum during a two-day online voting period (March 6-7) through the SDSU WebPortal.

However, the results are not final.

Next Steps

The unofficial A.S. election results will be forwarded to the Campus Fee Advisory Committee, who will then pass along their recommendation to President Sally Roush next month. The results will become official following tentative approval by President Roush.

The referendum, if officially approved, gives way to a massive renovation of the current facilities—expanding the space from 78,000 to 148,000 square feet. The proposed project also includes additional recreational outdoor field space.

“This vote means that we are finally able to provide recreation access for all SDSU students starting in fall 2021,” said A.S. Vice President of University Affairs Chris Thomas. “We will soon begin having discussions with various communities of students in an effort to start planning every square foot of what this building is going to look like.”

The referendum removes the current $19 monthly fee to use the facility. Instead, the fee will be folded into the university’s mandatory Student Body Center Fee—increasing it by $195 per semester. The Student Body Center Fee, initiated in 1963, is included in tuition and covered by financial aid. It pays for services and/or expenses associated with constructing, maintaining and/or operating the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, Viejas Arena, Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre, Mission Bay Aquatic Center, Aztec Recreation Center, Aztec Aquaplex, SDSU Children’s Center, Scripps Cottage and the Recreation Field. The fee also pays for student access to programs and activities within several of these facilities.

The fee increase will not go into effect until fall 2021, when construction is expected to be completed.

If approved, construction, which will be carried out in phases, is expected to start summer 2019 and will be finished by fall 2021.

The ARC was originally built in 1997.
