- What inspired you to do this kind of work? I’ve always been a writer at heart. As a kid, I’d write stories and poems. I fell in love with journalism on my high school newspaper staff. I was a journalism major (and Daily Aztec contributor) in college. And I love to write about my personal experiences on my blog, www.leahsthoughts.com. How long have you worked at SDSU? I have worked on campus for 14 years, with the first four being at KPBS.
- What is the best piece of advice you ever received? “If your ship hasn’t come in, swim out to it.”
- What is your favorite thing about your job? I love creating pieces of communication that inspire and entertain through words. I feel so lucky that I have a job where I can actually practice my passion for writing.
- What about your field or position do you think would surprise people the most? Not all writers are depressed. I also think people are surprised that writers tend to like being introverted.
- What is the most interesting or surprising thing about you (like a hidden talent, where you’re from or a special hobby)? I love to cook and bake. I’ve devised my own system for creating a month’s worth of meal ideas and making said dinners on weekends to freeze for workdays.
- If you could only rescue one thing from your burning office, what would it be? My two SDSU diplomas framed with a drawing of Hepner Hall.
- What music do you play most often in your office or car? Favorite musicians include Mary Chapin Carpenter and James Taylor. I always have one of their CDs in my car.
- What was the last movie you saw? Thumbs up or down? The last movie I saw in the theater was “The Social Network” – definite thumbs up. I love anything Aaron Sorkin writes.
- What is your favorite restaurant? Choice of Mandarin, a family-owned Chinese restaurant in Tierrasanta. I’ve been eating there since I was a kid and it’s still the best Chinese I’ve had.
- What city would you like to visit or visit again? I would love to travel the United States and see all facets of this country – from the Pacific Northwest, to the middle America plane states, to the streets of New Orleans.
- What is your favorite book? There are too many to name! I loved “The Help,” anything by Andres Dubus III, Chris Bohjalian, and Peggy Orenstein.
- What is your favorite sports team or who is your favorite individual athlete? I hate to admit this, but I’m really not a sports fan. But if I had to chose, I’d go with my Aztecs.
