FIRST-TIME FRESHMAN

 Spring 2020 - International Freshman Orientation

All First-Time International Freshmen are expected to register and attend the International Freshman Orientation.

Here's why you must attend:

  • Review your course selection with an academic advisor to make sure you are registered in the right classes
  • Understand General Education, major, and graduation requirements
  • Receive essential academic planning and course registration assistance
  • Receive a personalized academic information packet
  • Learn to use SDSU's Web registration system and other WebPortal services
  • Meet in groups with Assistant Deans, faculty and staff advisors, and trained student Ambassadors
  • Learn what it means to be a responsible member of the SDSU community

 If you have been admitted as a First-Time International Freshman at San Diego State University, please complete the following steps  to prepare for New Student Orientation:   

Steps to follow: 

  1. Complete the Pre-Arrival Immigration Form
  2. Arrive in San Diego by Wednesday, January 15, 2020
  3. The mandatory Immigration Check-In is scheduled for Thursday, January 16, 2020, from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM at the International Student Center. (Individual check-in times will be emailed to you one week before immigration check-in. Please make sure to check your email regularly for all follow-up information.
  4. In order to receive your SDSUcard at Immigration Check-In, please visit Online Student Accounting Services at sdsu.edu/sas and pay $18.00 for your SDSUcard. After payment, upload your photo on your mobile application "GET" or online at get.cbord.com/sdsu   Your SDSUcard will not be ready for pick up at Immigration Check-In if you do not upload a photo. Bring a valid ID to pick up your SDSUcard.
  5. International Freshman Orientation is scheduled on Friday, January 17, 2020, at 9:00 AM  in Storm Hall 12.


Immigration Check-In | Thursday, January 16

Where & When:

Thursday, January 16, 2020, International Student Center (ISC) 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM 

Your personal check-in time will be emailed to you one week before immigration check-in.

Documents needed for Immigration Check-In:

  • I-94 record: After you enter the U.S., an electronic record of your admission, known as the I-94, will be created. Retrieve a copy of your I-94 by visiting the CBP website and clicking on "GET MOST RECENT I-94". Please screenshot a copy on your phone or print out and bring it to Immigration Check-in. 
  • U.S. Address & Telephone: you will be asked to provide your address in the U.S. during immigration check-in. If you already have a US phone number please bring that too. 
  • If you are a government-sponsored student, please also bring financial documentation from your government sponsor.

We will be making copies of these documents:

  • Picture page (bio) of your Passport
  • Visa page
  • Arrival stamp: Stamp placed in your passport at the airport; usually on the page across from your visa

ISC Mentor Program

International students who come to SDSU often face unique challenges from being in a new and unfamiliar environment. This can impact a new student's social or academic adjustment.

You can select a SDSU mentor student who understands these issues and can help you during this period of adjustment.

Required 1:1 Advising Session

All international freshmen are required to meet with an ISC advisor at the beginning of the semester. The advising sessions are intended to support your transition to SDSU and to help you familiarize yourself with campus culture, resources, policies, procedures, and student life opportunities.
