Health Insurance Requirements for J-1 Students

J-1 exchange students are required to purchase the pre-approved policy offered by JCB Insurance Solutions in order to satisfy the California State University insurance requirement.

The policy that you purchase will be issued by the Anthem insurance provider. All the information you need regarding the policy can be found on the JCB Insurance Solutions and Anthem websites. You will create an online account when you purchase the policy. Through this account, you can know the detailed policy coverage, print your insurance ID card and find a doctor or clinic that accepts the Anthem insurance that you purchased through JCB Insurance Solutions. 

After purchasing the insurance you will be able to view and download your digital insurance ID card on the insurance start date or three weeks after enrollment, whichever is latest.

If you need to see a doctor before this time, please contact the ISC. We will reach out to JCB Insurance Solutions to obtain the ID card information for you.  

Refund Requests

Refunds for payments by credit card or debit card can be issued up to 120 days from the date of purchase or by the refund deadline, whichever is earlier. Refunds for payments by e-check can be issued by the refund deadline and in most cases offers more flexibility than credit card or debit card payments. For new students who are unsure if they will be able to obtain a visa in time to begin the SDSU program, it is advisable to wait until after the visa is issued to purchase health insurance.

Insurance for dependents

J-1 students are required to purchase insurance for dependents living in the United States. You must purchase insurance for your dependent(s) within 30 days of their arrival in the U.S.  While insurance for dependents is not available through JCB Insurance Solutions, you can view several options by visiting the JCB Insurance Solutions webpage and entering "San Diego State University" and the plan year and type of student, then selecting the dot corresponding to Dependent Coverage.
