2022 Disability Celebration Month
Dear SDSU Community,
San Diego State University is commemorating Disability Celebration Month through a series of exciting community events throughout April. Disability organizations date back to the 1800s, but progress for disability rights experienced a significant period of growth in the second half of the 20th century. During this time, the disability rights community spent many years advocating for change. It was not until 1990 that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed. The ADA, and the subsequent ADA Amendments Act of 2008, are well known civil rights legislation that prohibit discrimination against disabled people and continue to shape the disability community today.
Disabled thinkers, artists, politicians, and activists have had an incredible impact on society. For example, Assistive Technology (AT) has been used to provide accommodations to disabled peoples while also influencing how the world operates. Accommodations for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals led to technological advancements that we use to communicate every day.
