Sophomore Success Program Exemption Request

Program Description and Expectations

The Sophomore Success Program at San Diego State University is a full-service and immersive academic and student life support initiative for second year students. The Sophomore Success Program requires non-local sophomores to live on campus and that they sign a two-year license agreement with the Office of Housing Administration prior to their first year at SDSU. More information about the two-year residency requirement can be found on the Office of Housing Administration website

Through a collaborative process with the University, student leaders, and alumni/ae, Fraternity & Sorority Life has developed an exemption process for students in the Greek community based on student success criteria for individuals and organizations. Provided that below expectations are met, up to thirty percent (30%) of the beds in housed fraternities and sororities can be occupied by sophomores. Sophomores who are approved for this program will be released from the second year of their Office of Housing Administration License Agreement.

  • Individual Expectations: Each sophomore who is approved to reside in the fraternity or sorority house must maintain a cumulative and semester GPA as stipulated by their respective chapter or a 2.80 GPA (whichever is higher). Those approved must be in good standing with the University during the application process (not on academic or disciplinary probation and fulfilling all financial obligations). The individual must also be on the chapter's roster and in good standing with the chapter at the time of approval.
  • Organizational Expectations: Each organization must: (a) meet the minimum accreditation level outlined by the Fraternity & Sorority Life office, (b) be in good standing academically, (c) take part in the Partner Training for House Directors (including emergency reporting protocol), Faculty/Staff Advisors, and Alumni/ae Advisors and (d) meet all health, safety and fire marshal guidelines established by the University.
