Steps to participating in an international program - find out about how to complete your first steps in this process.
It is good to begin planning for an international program as early as possible! Application deadlines vary by program, but are generally due about one semester before your semester abroad. As a general rule, you should start researching programs and gathering information 6 to 9 months before you plan to go abroad. Certain SDSU majors and destinations may require students to apply earlier.
All students must have a valid passport in order to study abroad. Please review the information below for more directions.
If you need to apply for a new passport or renew an expired one, then you can visit the SDSU Passport office at the International Student Center. You can also examine the travel.state.gov website for instructions.
Please remember you must use the passport book while studying abroad. Basic processing takes four to six weeks. Make sure to apply for or renew your passport as soon as possible to minimize delay later. You will need a passport during the application process.
All SDSU international degree-seeking students and U.S. permanent residents must use their home country passports when studying abroad. International students should also meet with an International Student Advisor in the International Student Center to discuss immigration matters.
